Drops

You may drop students on Tabroom until 8:00 p.m. Friday.

Drops after 7:30 a.m. on the day of the tournament will be charged a $10 nuisance fee. Please text 207-735-3436 with any drops on the morning of.

Fees

  • LD: $7 per entry ($3.50 per person for new schools)
  • PF: $14 per team ($7 per team for new schools)
  • Congress: $7 ($3.50 per person for new schools)
  • Speech*: $7 per student entry ($3.50 per student entry for new schools)

*Single entry only due to room constraints.

Judge requirements

All fractional entries round up.

  • LD: 1 judge for 2 entries
  • PF: 1 judge for 2 teams
  • Congress: 1 judge for 5 entries
  • Speech: 1 judge for 5 entries

Veteran debaters and speech competitors who have earned 150 NFL points (or equivalent for not NFL schools) are eligible to judge! Veteran debaters and speech competitors with fewer points can shadow judge. Shadow judges do not count towards your judging requirements, but are eligible for NFL points.

Judge Training

Judge training sessions and opportunities to shadow judge will be available for all new adult judges. Bring them in to learn the fine art of judging!

Purchasing judges

There will be a limited number of judges to purchase for $60 per judge. You must clear your request with the tournament director by Monday, October 10.

Judge Timers

Be sure to bring timers for your judges. Some timers will be available through the MFA for a deposit of $5. Cell phones with the ringer off are acceptable for use as timers, as are mobile devices with timing apps (many specific to speech and debate are available and free).

Food

Breakfast and lunch items will be available for sale to the students. If students do not wish to buy food, they should bring their own lunch and snacks. Complimentary breakfast and lunch will be served to the judges. Students should not leave the school during the tournament. Water only is allowed in the classrooms.  In addition to pizza which will be available during the day, competitors will have the option to order sandwiches 2 days in advance of the tournament.

Events

  • Lincoln-Douglas: Novice
  • Public Forum: Novice
  • Congress: House and Senate split chambers if numbers and judges allow.
  • Speech: HI, ODEC, Prose, Poetry, storytelling, original works, extemp will all be run at the novice level.

PLEASE NOTE: Except for congress, all events are exclusively for competitors that have not previously participated in high school speech or debate. This includes crossovers (1 year of speech disqualifies from novice debate, and vice versa).

Event Topics

LD: Resolved: Countries ought to prohibit the production of nuclear energy.

PF: Resolved: In the United States public k-12 schools, the probable cause standard ought to apply to searches of students.

Congress: docket will be sent out in the week before the tournament.

Awards

There will be 1st, 2nd, and 3rd place trophies awarded to the top three debaters, top three congressional debaters, and top two speechies in all categories.

From Points North

Bangor and Orono: Take route 1A South through Hamden. Continue onto route 1 South through Camden. Take a right onto route 90 in Camden/Rockport. Take a right onto route 1 South. Continue until you arrive in Newcastle. There will be signs for Lincoln Academy on Route 1. From the exit ramp, take a left, and at the next intersection, take a right onto Academy Hill Road.

From Points Central

From Augusta: Take route 27 South to Wiscasset. At the end of 27, take a left onto route 1 North. In Newcastle, take the route 1B exit. You will arrive at an intersection where the road you are on curves right. You want to go straight at this curve to the intersection with the stop sign. Take a left onto Academy Hill Rd.

From Points South

From I-295: Take the Brunswick Exit (or take 196 E if you are in the Lewiston Area). Follow signs to Route 1. Take Route 1 North.  In Newcastle, take the route 1B exit. You will arrive at an intersection where the road you are on curves right. You want to go straight at this curve to the intersection with the stop sign. Take a left onto Academy Hill Rd.

Parking

Parking is available across the street from the bus loop. Please park buses at the back of the parking lot.
